Vitamin C is essential for humans.
The advised consumption of vitamin C is about 90 mg per person per day. This amount is present in a balanced diet. Vitamin C powder can be used to supplement your normal daily need. Sometimes you need more vitamin C: if you participate in endurance sport, if you smoke or are recovering from illness, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Supplementary vitamin C is also advised in case of an unbalanced diet, e.g. during weight loss.
Some sources advise the use of larger doses. There is no evidence of any risk in taking more than the advised 90 mg vitamin C, however we do not recommend using more than 2000 mg per day as higher doses can lead to stomach and digestive problems.
Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid and E300. Under many circumstances it acts as an anti-oxidant. It is commonly used as a healthy food preservative. In fact citrus fruits contain a lot of vitamin C, to prevent them from spoiling in the hot areas where they grow.
Vitamin C can be dissolved in liquids, sprinkled over or mixed with food.
In contrast to vitamin C pills or capsules, crystalline vitamin C is 100% pure. There are no fillers, gelatin or other substances. It is free of allergens and suitable for a vegan diet.
